Summary
This article considers the role that ceteris paribus has played in the historical development of empirical demand analysis in agriculture. Ceteris paribus was viewed as unobtainable by the early economic statisticians. Econometricians invoked the experimental paradigm to assure ceteris paribus. Whether researchers achieve ceteris paribus in observational data remained, for the first econo-metricians, an unanswered question. However, the next generation of econometricians appear to have taken ceteris paribus for granted. The possibility of an evolutionary economic system suggests that ceteris paribus may not be obtainable outside the laboratory.
