The scope and context of rural development

IAN D. HODGE*

Department of Land Economy, Cambridge University U.K.

Summary

This paper is intended as a setting to the individual country studies of rural development literature. However, it has not been possible to relate this background information to each of the countries involved and thus it is somewhat Anglocentric. Furthermore, much of the comparative material relates to EC countries. However, it is hoped that the material and areas considered will have similarities and parallels which therefore can provide a helpful basis to the subsequent reviews.
